Aimee’s Story

I was born at St Marys Hospital in Manchester and grew up in Reddish, Stockport. I’m the youngest of six children and have three sisters and two brothers. My mum moved out when I was 12 and since then I have had no real contact with her, we all lived with my father. Growing up in our home was not always easy, both parents struggled with alcohol abuse and we would regularly witness violence, our normality was to take care of ourselves as appose to having any physical or emotional parental support.

DMSF came to my attention in the summer of 2011 when they came to deliver community sessions at Wright Robinson High school where I was a pupil, I would say growing up in a tumultuous home can have a huge impact on your schooling life, it is not easy to be able to figure out how to deal with your emotions and experiences at such a young age, with the help and guidance of DMSF I achieved good grades throughout high school which could sometimes be difficult due to circumstances at home.

I began training with the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation through my high school and enjoyed the time spent with my friends in the community group, but it wasn’t until I was invited to train with the performance squad that something switched inside my head. Being in a social group was fun, but being challenged to actually change your way of living and have a long term focus gives you life skills that can help you through any situation.

I’m currently ranked 2nd in Europe over 3000m steeple chase. Since 2014 I have won 6 British titles in the age group U17, U20 and U23 as well as winning the English School Championship in 2015. I have been ranked the best upcoming steeple chaser in Britain for the last 5 years and is currently ranked 2nd in Britain for seniors. My short-term goal is to qualify for the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.

I would not have achieved any of these results if it hadn’t been for the chance session with DMSF and especially the international coaching I have had from Vicente a seasoned Olympic Coach. The financial support from DMSF has been vital to me being able to progress to international level, components of elite sport such as kit, altitude training and physiotherapy are vital in reaching a high level however this is something I would have never had access to without this type of funding and therefor would never have had the opportunity to progress. The personal day-to-day support from Vicente (not only his coaching) gave me the belief, structure and inspiration I never had before my sporting journey began.
